Hey people this is something I think more people should know about.

DROP THE PHONY CHARGES ON SHAREEF ALEEM! SAY NO TO RACIST POLICE BRUTALITY!
On February 3rd, 2005, Denver activist, Shareef Aleem, was targeted and attacked by campus police at a Board of Regents meeting convened to discuss the University of Colorado's intended action against Ward Churchill. Shareef Aleem went to this meeting because it was advertised as an open meeting, and he wanted to film the event for Denver Community Television and show support for the students dissent against education cuts and fee hikes as well as their protest of attacks on Ward Churchill, a professor who blamed U.S. foreign policy for leading to the 9/11 attacks. Aleem stood up in the meeting after one activist had been asked to leave for openly addressing the Regents. He reiterated that the meeting was advertised as being public and stated, "Is this a free country or not? Do we live in a democracy or not? If not, let's stop calling it that." Campus cops then pushed aside an older Black woman and began grabbing Aleem, who told them to leave him alone and not touch him. He said he had a right to be there and that the students should be allowed to speak. Shareef was grabbed by cops, pulled down on top of one, had his hands bound and was shot in the neck with a taser.
HE HAS SINCE BEEN CHARGED WITH SECOND-DEGREE ASSAULT ON AN OFFICER.
We are asking for national, and even, international support for this anti-racist activist who has challenged the brutal police in Denver and the surrounding metropolitan areas. This case is a political one because of the fact that Shareef showed support for the students who were expressing their dissent to the right-wing attacks on campuses across the country trying to silence progressive voices, and because Shareef has been so active against police brutality. His case is an attempt to silence him and his activism and to threaten those who stand by him and his actions. Also, the possibility of Shareef facing up to 16 years in prison is a real threat to his and his family's well being.
SHAREEF NEEDS THE SOLIDARITY OF JUSTICE-LOVING PEOPLE EVERYWHERE! BY ATTACKING SHAREEF'S RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH, THE POLICE ARE TRYING TO INTIMIDATE AND SILENCE THE ENTIRE SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVEMENT IN DENVER AND AROUND THE COUNTRY!
AN INJURY TO ONE IS AN INJURY TO ALL!
We are asking that people deluge the judge presiding his trial and the prosecuting District Attorney and let them know that we will not let Shareef be victimized and demand that the charges be dropped.
In defense of Aleem, send emails to defendshareef@yahoo.com and cards or money to pay for his attorney or letters of support in care of Aleem to 4860 Chambers Road, P.O. Box 173. Denver, CO 80239.
Letters of protest can also be sent to Judge Michael A. Cox, Adams County Justice Center, 1100 Judicial Center Dr., Brighton, CO 80601, or to Don Quick, 17th Judicial District Attorney, 1000 Judicial Center Dr., Suite 100, Brighton, CO 80601.

Re: Politics? Students? Interested?
Sat, May 14, 2005 - 8:26 AMClearly you've never had a situation that an officer escalated that you lost Craig. Hopefully you never will. Hopefully you'll never have a woman point a finger and accuse you of rape. True or not it would ruin you life. People would doubt your honesty, your integrity, and your character. You would be a villain. Would anyone hear you say you didn't do it? Would anyone believe you? I suspect the reply would be, "Yeah right buddy."
I always wonder how many people question the accusations made on America's Most Wanted and related shows. I think the answer is probably a very, very, very few.
I don't believe this guy assaulted a cop despite the charges levied against him.

The System is Perfect!
Sun, May 15, 2005 - 10:15 PMThe system is perfect when you're not really part of it. Law enforcement has it's own banking system, it's own health care system, it's own social system, it's own legal system (mediation anyone?), and depends little or nothing on the same services and resources normal people (civilians) depend on. This is similar in my opinion to the conflict of interest apparent in a politician voting on the social security system, something they aren't ever going to need and something they do not pay a penny into.
From my perspective cops aren't accountable for their mistakes. You can't make a cop pay for ripping up the headliner of your 30 year old car even if they didn't find any drugs on a routine seat-belt stop because they suspected you were in possession of drugs because you're shaking because you are afraid of police because when you were a little boy you watched police break the arm of a little girl who's only offense was sleeping in a place they didn't want her to sleep and because you're vocal about rights, freedom, and equality and so fear they have a motivation for silencing you. For this reason, they have the right to damage your car without paying for it for example.
As a former officer are you telling me there are no abuses of the power at an officer's fingertips? Are you telling us that even tiny abuses are just our imagination and that the system really works? What about when a cop plows into a mother and child while driving drunk because his license was never suspended? How about the standard of a cop never getting a speeding ticket or traffic infraction because they have a badge next to their ID? I sure wouldn't mind a never-get-a-ticket pass.
I'm not against the cops. I'm not against the system. There are functional parts of it for sure, but there are also abuses and manipulations to silence people who might undermine some of the privilege the authorities have come to enjoy. Even as a former officer you still have privileges and access to parts of our society that civilians do not. Using any of them breaks the integrity of what is supposed to happen and destroys the honor of our fine system. I'm not asking you to give up your belief in the system, I'm merely asking that you recognize that it's just as flawed as a "perfect spouse".
Officers, just like us plebes, are human and suffer the same frailties we suffer. That includes theft, drugs, dishonor, deceit, and greed. Just like anyone else, they are capable of lying to keep their job. So too are officers capable of honor, integrity, honesty, and generosity. There are even a few who would give up their job for the sake of keeping their honor.
If you don't read the full context of what happened to the young man that this post was originally about, at least recognize that my pointing out that there are faults with the system isn't taking away from the successes. There are still a great deal more people guilty put away than there are innocent but there are also a great deal of guilty people let free and plenty of innocent people denied their freedom. To address that many of our laws are ineffective out outright wrong is an entirely different topic that I will not address here.
I will take you at face value if you make the claim that you never once manipulated a situation to your favor, and that you always followed ethics and law without fail. I have met men and women who are capable of such integrity and I have no reason to believe you are not one of them. I will not accept that claim from you for any other officer however, as they will need to speak for themselves. No matter what a person says though, their actions will always speak louder than their words.
Regards,

Re: The System is Perfect!
Tue, May 17, 2005 - 6:26 PMI agree with you absolutely about injustices in the system and the treatment that officers get from fellow officers is unjust, but really nice to have. For the most part the system works fairly well. As a fairly well off, educated, white, male, I understand that I am always treated very well by the police and society in general. I believe that our society is very much based on cast. I'm just one of the lucky ones I guess. But I have always worked hard to achieve that level in society.
Sometimes it's not all that it's cracked up to be with all the pressure to conform. I don't think it makes sense what I'm writing, I hope it does for you. Sorry, I'm in a hurry and tired. Now I have to go to Pathfinders, Seventh Day Adventist Scouting. I'm one of the leaders. I'm never done.

Re: Politics? Students? Interested?
Fri, May 13, 2005 - 11:51 PMIt's a sad case and it's not alone at all, and we can expect it to get worse before it gets better. Ignorant people, who are incapable of standing up for themselves and their own beliefs, always love turning to violence as the pbjective solution, unfortunately, that will probably always be the case.
Fuck any establishment that preys on it's own populace, the first signs of civilization in decay.
