The stigma comes from the all to prevalent tragedy of an abnormally high concentration of trash, tweakers, and crack heads. These people are as proud to be who and where they are as anyone in LA is. Probably more so from what I've seen.

It is also common knowledge that the property values out here are lower and that tends to turn off the brand whores in LA as well (this is part of the stigma for sure). It's all about image there. A squat in LA is cooler or more appealing than a house in the IE. I don't agree with that sentiment but I have run into a few times.

Another problem we have with "out here," that also seems to be common knowledge, is that there is nearly nothing to do. I blame the city planners for this. Too many foddy doddies trying to keep their quaint little towns, quaint little towns. They of course seem to ignore the fact that even Hemet, with no freeway access had a population of 65,000 (sixty five ~thousand~) people and has been growing between 3 and 6 percent every year since then. And with nothing to do, people turn to point one (drugs) or sex. Sometimes both.

Which brings us to the last point. There seems to be a common opinion, even IN the IE, that people here tend to inbreed. It's like we're 100 years before now and 1000 miles from the major metropolis of Los Angles. I met one guy recently who has a kid. The kid is nearly a year old. The father, he's only 17. The mother is 21. This is eerily common. The scary part of this whole thing is that aside from the fact that it's a kid having a kid, they're both ignorantly racist.

The other final point I nearly forgot.

Prejudice, racial and otherwise, out here is not only expected, it is encouraged. This is to say nothing of any other rights. Women, homosexuals, religious beliefs and believers (unless Christian), foreigners, and anyone or anything differing from a narrow view of acceptable are all fodder for jokes and crass reminders that I'm nowhere near home.

I just wish I could afford a two bedroom place to myself in LA.
